THE HISTORY

"I'm just an old man passing through..........."   E.L. Calloway, Sr.

Eddie Lee Calloway was born on April 12, 1925 to the union of the late Maggie Dawkins-Calloway and  Hugh Calloway in Phoenix City, Lee County, Alabama. His formal education was received in the city of his birth.

In later years Eddie moved to Gadsden, Alabama where he met the love of his life, the former, Slyvia Lou Dunican. They were united in the bonds of Holy Matrimony in 1948. In May of 2016, the former Mr. & Mrs. Eddie Lee and Sylvia Lou Calloway, Sr. celebrated- with their family of Five Generations-their 68th Wedding Anniversary. There was an article published in the Gadsden Times of this wonderful union.

Their union was blessed with eight children, five of whom, Jerry Dunning, John Calloway, Sr., Deborah McAdams, Henrietta Mickle, and Jeanetta Calloway, preceded him in death.

Later in her life, Eddie began a serious study of the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and after learning the truth about the promised paradise earth, he symbolized his dedication to the true God, Jehovah, by getting baptized November 20, 1992. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing Bible truths with all he met.

Eddie served in the military and after being honorably discharged, he returned back to Gadsden, working for Republic Steel as a brick mason for over 30 years. Upon retiring from Republic Steel, he spent his retirement years spending time with his grandchildren, his family and devoting his time to following Jehovah’s word.

Eddie loved to talk and make jokes. No one was overlooked when it came to him saying something to make you laugh. He studied history and was a great historian, remembering facts and dates all the way up until his demise. He had the type of memory that was photogenic. If he saw it or read it, he never forgot it.

Before Eddie’s stay in the hospital, he would always ask for his ‘main man’, his grandson, John Brooks, Jr. When John would come to visit and care for his grandfather, he could always put a smile on his face.

Eddie’s quiet life came to an end on September 20, 2017 at Gadsden Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sylvia; his parents; grandparents; five children, Jerry Dunning, John Calloway, Sr., Deborah McAdams, Henrietta Mickle, Jeanetta Calloway;  brothers, Earnest, Willie James and Sherman.

Eddie leaves to cherish many pleasant memories to three caring children, Betty J. Brooks, Eddie (Lisa) Calloway, Jr.,  Sylvia (Billy Joe) Watson;  grandchildren, Angel Dunning, Jerry Dunning, Jr., Elizabeth Dunning, Jeanetta (Thomas) Graham, Betty Lynn Brooks, Eddie Brooks (Felicia), John Brooks, Jr.(Tyra), Terrance Barno, Chawato Barno, Damon Mickle, John Calloway, Jr., Eddie Calloway, III, Candace Henry, Sylvia Reid, Larry McAdams, Jr., grandchild they raised as their own child, Tamiko (Jai) Covington; 37 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; special sons-in-law, John Brooks, Sr. and Larry McAdams, Sr.; brother, Dock Calloway; special sister, Bessie Calloway; a host of nieces and nephews all over the United States from Alabama to Connecticut, Georgia to Boston, Massachusetts to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends and special friends too numerous to name.
