With heartfelt sympathy, we announce the earthly transition of Eugene Dunn May of Inkster, MI, formerly of Cuba (Kinterbish Community), AL, who traded time for eternity on Thursday, March 21, 2024, please keep this family in your thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time.
Eugene Dunn May was born on July 25, 1949, to the late D. C. and the late Annie Dee Dunn in Birmingham, Alabama. As an infant, Eugene was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Bennie and Lula Brown May, and was reared in the Kinterbish Community.
Eugene confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Grants Chapel CME Church in Cuba, Alabama. He was educated in the Sumpter County School System and was a 1967 graduate of Kinterbish High School. After graduating high school, Eugene moved to Detroit, Michigan, and began working for Ford Motor Company in January 1968. His desire to serve his country motivated him to take a sabbatical leave from Ford Motor Company to join the U. S. Army in 1969, transferring to the U. S. Army Reserves in 1971. While enlisted, Eugene served two tours in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1974.
In 1990, Eugene met the love of his life, Gerdine Johnson, and they were married on March 22, 2002.
Eugene was a diligent worker. He was employed with Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan for over 25 years before retiring. He was a community volunteer and assisted with counseling cancer patients at local hospitals. He was the face of the Detroit Cancer Support System which featured his photo on their billboard as an inspiration to other cancer patients.
He assisted his elderly neighbors with keeping their lawns cut in the summer and keeping their driveways cleared of snow in the winter. Eugene started a lawn servicing company, where he was committed to providing professional and courteous service as well as being very meticulous at ensuring that his clients had well-manicured lawns, a job he was dedicated to until his health failed him.
Eugene transitioned from his earthly life and entered into eternal rest with God, on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at John D. Dingell VA Medical Center CLC Hospice Unit in Detroit, MI.
Eugene leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Gerdine May; one beloved daughter, Zara (Darren) Blakely of Pell City, AL; two sons, Charles Johnson of Detroit, MI, and Lem Sims of Inster, MI; and a host of other relatives and friends.
