Linda Michelle Smith was born on October 11, 1970 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the second of two children to Hattie Mae Robertson.  She confessed Christ at an early age, and was a member of Hurricane Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she sang in the choir.   Later, after moving to Gadsden she united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, East Gadsden, Ala.

Linda was a 1989 graduate of Holt High School, Holt, Alabama.  She pursued higher education at the University of Alabama, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.   She furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Alabama in 1997.  She was an educator in the Alabama public school system for 19 years, and was loved by all her students.  She taught at Holt Elementary and Davis-Emerson Middle School, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and at Stowers Hill Intermediate School (now Attalla Elementary), after moving to Gadsden.  She was a distinguished educator, having won The Alabama State Teacher of the Year Nominee (Davis-Emerson Middle School, 2004) and Teacher of the Year (Stowers Hill, 2007-08).   She also shared her teaching talents by helping with the Vacation Bible School at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, East Gadsden.

In 2004, she was joined in matrimony with Kevin O. Smith in Jamaica.   They spent a total of 16 loving years together.  Linda was a loving wife and mother to their child Kayla.  She valued family and enjoyed planning and hosting family gatherings.  She would always say “let’s have a “get-together.”  Linda enjoyed traveling, having set foot in Italy, the isles of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.   Also, she especially liked to shop.  She was a treasure to all who knew her, and she is sorely missed.

Linda departed this life on September 24, 2012.   She is preceded in death by her grandmother Bertha Robertson.    She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memories:  her husband of eight years Kevin Smith; four children:  Kayla Smith, Brandon (fiancée Jane) Smith, Shaw AFB, South Carolina;  Kendall (fiancée Carley) Smith, Jacksonville, Alabama; Kelcey Smith, UNA, Florence, Alabama; mother Hattie Mae Robertson, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; mother-in-law: Faye Nell (Richard) Edwards; father-in-law: Billy Smith; grandmother-in-law: Maudesta Jones; sister Regina (Rev. Kevin and family,
Linda will be greatly missed. She truly had a passion for teaching and didn''t want to give it up. She was a phonomenal teacher and woman. It was a blessing to have her on our staff. Her legacy of excellence, love, courage, and passion for kids will forever be etched in our minds. I pray that God will give you and your family the strength to face each day and that warm memories will help soften your sorrow.

I worked with Linda at Stowers Hill. She kept her desk so neat and in order, and she kept her class in order as well.... But her students loved and respected her. One year I went in and helped out a few of the students that wet needing extra help while she was teaching and I saw first hand what went on in her classroom. That class loved to learn! It was math too!!! Ha! Ha! She had a wonderful personality, a beautiful smile (so glad you put that picture in the paper, it was exactly her!), and her friendship was special to me. I had the computer lab and she would bring her students each week and say "Miss Patterson, are you ready?" I had magazines that she loved, and I''''d give them to her, and snacks. She told me she LOVED coming to the lab! I will never forget her and the light she shined on my life! She loved that Kayla, and she loved her husband, stepchildren and the rest of her family because we spent an hour each week talking and she told me stories about all of you. I know this is long. I''''m a big talker, everyone knows. I couldn''''t come to the funeral but I will love and miss her forever. May God give you all peace and comfort. You all have my love. Especially little Kayla.
