It all began….

On September 11, 1977, around 7:32 pm, Derrik LaWayne, an 8lb. 10oz. bundle of joy was born! He brought joy to his father, mother - and for 40 years - the world!

Growing up, Derrik had a fun childhood.  He participated in many youth sports.  He played Little League baseball, basketball, and football throughout his early school years.  His love of sports was evident throughout his childhood.  At the age of 13, Derrik organized a T-ball team, "East Gadsden Fire", so his little sister, Mekeia, would not have to play baseball with the boys - see how caring he was?

Sports was not the only area in which Derrik excelled.  He earned many academic honors during his school years.  As a 6th grader, he won the Spelling Bee, out-spelling 7th and 8th graders!  He was a recipient of the ‘Who's Who Among America's High School Seniors’ award. Derrik was also a member of the Engineering Fraternity, Eta Kappa Tau.

Derrik accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized on March 13, 1988 under the leadership of the late Rev. Milton Woods.  Derrik was a faithful and active member of his church. He was a part of the Boy’s Crusader, sang in the youth and mass choirs and was one of the original members of the 16th Street Male Chorus.

Derrik continued to play sports from elementary school to high school.  After graduating from Litchfield High School in 1995, Derrik played two years of college football at Alabama A&M University.  Wearing the #88 proudly, Derrik played as a tight-end and was recognized as a member of the "Horsemen" tight-end trio of the team.  After sustaining a serious neck injury, Derrik began to focus more on his electronic engineering studies.

On July 11, 1997, God sent Derrik and LaShawnee Carlisle - both students at Alabama A&M University, their own bundle of joy - a son, Deshawndric Dewayne Isaiah Nelms. Derrik was always a positive influence in his son's life.

After college, Derrik made Huntsville his home.  He had various jobs that allowed him to use his computer and electronic skills.

Continuing his life's journey, Derrik met his wife, Yvonne Lawrence and they were married in Holy Matrimony on September 21, 2002 by the Rev. Eddie Ethridge, pastor of 16th Street Baptist Church.  In marrying Yvonne, Derrik gained a son, Darius Lawrence and a daughter, Caitlyn Lawrence. Derrik loved and cherished all three children.

On Derrik's 40-year life journey, he was able to use his God-given talents, skills and knowledge to help make a difference in the lives of others.  He gave generously of his time, talents and treasures to his family, friends and anyone else with a need.  He was known to be the ‘go-to person’ for any IT/computer issues.  He knew of all the latest updates to electronics. He even installed them for you, from the Firestick to the Amazon Echo. If there were instructions to it, Derrik could fix it! He loved challenges and some challenges were repairing his own vehicle by Googling it and reading the instructions.  He had a knack for cooking, also.  It was nothing for him to whip up a meal, even the healthy ones too!!

While on this journey, he kept close contact with his family and was involved in all family activities.  Derrik loved his family and took family serious.  He also took his friendships serious.  If he was your friend, you had a friend to the end.

In 2006, he followed in the footsteps of his baby brother, Osar, and became a Legend of the Gorgeous Gamma Epsilon Chapter of the most prestigious Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

His earthly journey was completed on Friday, February 9, 2018, just a little after midnight, in Huntsville, Alabama.  He will be missed dearly by his family and all who came to meet and know him. Derrik’s smiles, phone calls, the excitement in his voice when he called to tell his family about his ventures, will be missed and cherished.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie & Laura Nelms, Lee & Elnora Carlisle; uncles, Charlie James Nelms, Jr., Ralph Carlisle and aunt, Carrie "Becky" Wilson.

Left to cherish Derrik’s memories are his wife, Yvonne Lawrence Nelms, Huntsville, AL; sons, DeShawndric Nelms, Davenport, FL, Darius Lawrence, Rocky Hill, CT, daughter, Caitlyn Lawrence, Houston, TX; father, Roger W. Condolence Booklet

   Posted Sun February 11, 2018
I would like to offer my personal condolences to your family. I hope that you will be able find strength in God’s promise at Revelation 21:4 that soon: “he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” You are in my thoughts and prayers.

In this difficult time in your life, may you find comfort in God’s word, the Bible. James 4:8 encourages; “Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you.”
