Edward Lewis Tinker was born in Gadsden, Alabama on September 29, 1959 to the late JC “Jake” Tinker, Sr. and Virginia Lewis Tinker. He was the 11th of 12 children born to this faithful union.

Ed was baptized at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and graduated from St. Martin de Porres Catholic School.

Ed was virtually a straight A student throughout his entire educational quest. He was an honors student at Gadsden High School, Talladega College and the University of Florida where he studied history and law. As a Luard Scholar, Ed attended the University of Canterbury, Eliot College in Kent, England of the United Kingdom. All of Ed’s collegiate tuition, board, maintenance and travel expenses were paid in full through his academic achievements, honors and scholarships. Among his accomplishments, Ed was a Goodyear Merit Scholarship Recipient, a member of the Chapel Committee and Pre-Law Society and he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Ed decided to pursue a life of personal service and placed a higher value on personal interaction with people rather than personal financial gain.  For nearly 30 years, Ed fulfilled his purpose while serving in various capacities at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, where he was chosen as Employee of the Year twice (1992 and 2009), a selection made from more than 1200 employees. His final role was in security; defending patients, physicians, nurses, staff and visitors. His passion to serve extended beyond his work at the hospital and into his family and his love for children.

On Friday, December 28, 2018, Ed joined his parents, protectors and playmates, JC, Jr., Barbara, Betty, Jimmy, Robert, Edith, Tommie and Joe.

He leaves to cherish his memory a wife, Donna Kay; siblings, Dr. Helen (Johnny) McAlpine, Marlboro, MD, Gerrie Tinker, Gadsden, AL, Paul Tinker, Atlanta, GA and a little sister/niece, Nikki; daughter, Demetrius (Jerry) English; special niece, ZyKerria Taylor; mother-in-law, Dot Taylor; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, neighbors, co-workers and friends.

My sincere condolences to the family. My prayers are with you. The Lord has reached down and picked another one of his beloved flowers and carried him to his garden in heaven. Ed was one of Gods beautiful flowers that he loaned to us for a season. His season has come and gone. But one thing I can say is Ed brought so much joy to so many people. His memories will live on in everyone's hearts that came in contact with him.
Dear brother
