Councilman John Edward Appleby was born June 7, 1940 in Lineville, Clay County, Alabama to the union of the late John Willie and Alma Jean Denny.

'Johnny', as he was affectionately called, received his formal education in the Clay County School System, graduating from the Clay County Training School in 1960. He received Christ at a young age and was a life long member of Springhill Baptist Church. On July 27, 1962, he united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Sara Lewis, who shared his love of gardening.

'Johnny' believed in hard work and a honest living to provide for yourself and your family. He gave forty years of faithful service to Ace Products until his retirement. While with Ace Products, he was also employed with First State Bank of Lineville, where he dedicated forty-eight years of service until becoming too ill to work two months ago. He touched many lives throughout his travels between the Lineville, Ashland and Wedowee branches.

'Johnny' never served in the military, but he did fight for his community as he served on the Lineville City Council District 5 for over twenty years. Improving the conditions in his community and the quality of life of his fellow citizens was of great importance to him. He often went above his call of duty as councilman with the wisdom he imparted and the entertainment he provided through his 'wise tales' that were sure to make life seem a little easier to bear as he shared many hearty laughs.

Councilman Johnny traded this journey in life for a new life on December 3, 2019. Those who preceded him in this transition include his parents; son Richard Hearn; granddaughter, Kayla Norris; sisters, Gertha Oliver and Henry Sue Appleby.

Those left to continue on their journey through life carrying on his legacy of love include his wife of fifty-seven years, Sara Appleby, Lineville, AL; daughters, Beverly Lee, Goodwater, AL, Sharon Appleby, Decatur, GA, Connie (Charles) Bass, Lineville, AL; sister, Maebell Williamson, Lineville, AL; grandchildren, Kerry Norris, Birmingham, AL, Martise Norris, Goodwater, AL, Constance Bass, Jacksonville, AL, Charlene ( Allen) Rose, Phenix City, AL, Charles E. ( Ashley) Bass, Millbrook, AL, Jonathan Jones, Atlanta, AL; great-grandchildren, Jacoby, Jayda, Faith, Alenea, Charlotte, Trinity; brother-in-law, Arthur Oliver, Lineville, AL; sisters-in-law, Earline Turner, Lineville, AL, Cora Wood, Eunice Smith, Lakeland, FL; special daughters, Felicia Welch (Cornelius) Wood, Lineville, AL Stacey (Ricky) Swain, Ashland, AL; god-daughters, Aaliyah Williams, Ashland, AL, Kenyah Lawler, Lineville, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
