Cornelius Mitchell was born on September 2, 1940 in Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama to the union of the late Minister James Edward and Alice Berth Mitchell. At a young age, he confessed faith in Christ at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where his father was the associate pastor. He was educated in the Attalla City School System, attended Norris High School and finished his last year at Carver High School, class of 1960.In school, Neal played basketball and football. After School, Neal attended Alabama State University for two years until he was drafted into the United States Army.

Neal united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Estelle Chapman on June 2, 1962. They weren’t strangers by a long shot, as they had grown up in the same community and went to the same church and schools. Neal, as a youth, often found his way to Estelle’s family dinner table to enjoy her mom’s delicious food and ended up spending fifty –eight enjoyable years in love with Mr. & Mrs. Chapman’s daughter. Although they had no biological children, they served as bonus parents to many of their nieces, nephews and children in the ministry.

Neal was employed with Gulf State Steel for many years as a crain operator until the plant closed its doors. However, in 1965, Neal and Estelle began doing taxes in the basement of their home. In 1966, they established C & E Mitchell's Accounting. This husband and wife duo worked hand in hand in business until his passing.

In his late 20’s, Neal and his wife began studying the bible with Willie Anderson. This in-depth study of the bible led him to symbolize his dedication to Jehovah God on July 11, 1969 through water baptism. Neil faithfully served Jehovah by spreading all the things he was learning to others to help them learn about Jehovah too. In 1971, he was appointed as an elder in the congregation and it was a position that he took very seriously in his service to Jehovah’s people. He touched many lives in his faithful service.

On the morning of Tuesday, June 16, 2020, after an extended illness, Neal fell into a deep sleep just shortly after telling his family about seeing him again when Earth is transformed into a Paradise. Neil was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean Chatman; brothers, Ralph Mitchell and Odis Mitchell.

Neal leaves to cherish his many memories his wife of fifty-eight years, Estelle Mitchell, Gadsden, AL; nieces and nephews raised as children, Sharon Jones, Rainbow City, AL, Christopher Chapman, Sr., Lithonia, GA; Alma Coleman, Sharelle Woods, Brineal Rollins, all of Gadsden, AL; brothers, James (Cynthia) Mitchell, Atlanta, GA, John Mitchell, Jr., Gadsden, AL; nieces and nephews raised as siblings, Brien Chatman, Dallas, TX, Claudette Chatman, Cartersville, GA, Edward Chatman, Homer, LA; sisters-in-law, Earnestine Goggans, Aiken, SC, Gloria Fair, Middletown, OH; brothers-in-law, Robert Chapman, Gadsden, AL, Fred Chapman, Dallas, TX, Frank Chapman, San Jose, CA; a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

The family would like to send a special thank you to all who had a share in giving their love and support to Neil throughout his life and especially during his illness. A special honorable mention to the staff of Gadsden Regional Medical Center, UAB, Amedisys Hospice, Dr. Robinson, Dr. Castille and Dr. Shalamutha.

May Jehovah grant peace and the strength to bear the sting of death to Estelle and his family. I have such good memories with Bro. Mitchell. I will always remember how he took us little children to the back school when the Bible Stories book was released and we had our own little meeting. We felt very loved and cared for. He was also such a friend and comfort to my grandmother Earlene Albright. I will miss his smile and kind nature. I look so forward to seeing him again in the resurrection that he believed in so strongly. Love and prayers to the family.
