Music by The Piano Brothers

William Davis Craig was born November 20, 1923 in Ashland, Clay County, Alabama to the union of the late Joe Cephus and Rita Slaughter Craig. His education was received in the Clay County Schools until the passing of his mother and shortly there after his father. He was then left to be big brother and raise his younger sister and brothers.

Coming of age, William and his brother, Alphonso, relocated to Gadsden in the late 1930's for a better life. He accepted faith in Christ as a young man and united with Sweet Home United Methodist Church.  On July 4, 1944, he married Ms. Betty Jo. Their union was blessed with six children, Joyce Ann, Wanda, Darryl, Terry, Dewayne and Loraine. He later would wed with Maryland Sewell Brooks and would add seven children, Maryland, John, Jerry, Porter, Frankie, Sandra and Amanda.

Later on in life, W. D. began a serious study of the bible with the local Jehovah's Witnesses, Earl Parnell and Willie Anderson. This study of the bible led him to symbolize his dedication to Jehovah in 1987.

William was a hard worker. He worked for long times at Gulf State Steel and the Greater Gadsden Housing Authority. His longest career was almost thirty plus years as a mechanic at Coca-Cola, where he retired. Even after retirement, he still utilized his mechanic skills wherever they were needed. You could also say he was a mechanic when it came to the soil. He knew how the ground worked and could make anything grow in any yard he was asked for assistance to help cultivate.

W. D. departed his long fruitful life of ninety-six years on Monday, July 27, 2020 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Maryland Craig; children, Joyce Ann Craig, Wanda Craig, Terry Craig, Darryl Craig, Dewayne Craig, Jerry Brooks, Darius Craig; grandson, Courtney Craig; siblings, Lydian Craig, Alphonso Craig, Forrest Craig, Willie Craig and Carvin Craig.

Those left to cherish his legacy and wealth of knowledge are his sons, John Brooks, Porter Craig, Frankie (Angela) Craig, Justin Brooks, all of Gadsden, AL; daughters, Maryland Gene Brooks Holloway, Camp Hill, AL, Loraine (Kenneth) Wooley, Detroit, MI, Sandra Davis, Amanda (Fredrick) Tuck), both of Gadsden, AL; numerous grandchildren, great, great-great, great-great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Jana Brooks, Betty Calloway Brooks, both of Gadsden, AL; a host or other relatives and friends.

Graveside Service will be 11:00a.m. Friday, July 31, 2020 at Lincoln Hill Cemetery with Larry Thomas presiding. Viewing will be 4:00-6:00p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Etowah Chapel of Adams-Buggs Funeral Service.
