It is with heartfelt sympathy, we announce the passing of Mrs. Gwendolyn A. Howell of Gadsden, Alabama, who transitioned on Monday, October 4, 2021, at the age of 53. We ask that you please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Gwendolyn Annette Horton Howell was born on June 24, 1968, in Gadsden, AL to Lavon Horton and Ruth Burkes (Horton) Trammell.
She confessed Christ at a young age and joined Union Baptist Church, and then united with Victory Missionary Baptist Church, where she was the church pianist. She enjoyed music and began playing the piano at an early age. She served as the musician and assistant musician at several churches in the area.
Gwen attended Gadsden City Schools and graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1987. She was in the band and a color guard. She also attended Jacksonville State University and graduated from Gadsden State Technical College in Cosmetology and she worked at Beauty Ovations. Gwen attended Gadsden State Community where she graduated in May 2014 with a Medical Lab degree. She was employed in the medical field for many years.
Gwen is one of the most beautiful spirited, friendly and sociable people you could ever meet. She enjoyed life with family gatherings, traveling, singing, baking, and cooking (The Barbeque Contest Queen). Gwen is affectionally known as GeeGee by her grandbabies and she adored them with all of her heart.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Lavon Horton, Sr., and Ruth Burkes Trammell; her grandparents, Joe Burkes and Mary Frances Thomas, and Oscar and Etta Mae Horton, Sr.
On October 4, 2021, God opened heavens gates to her, just before noon.
Gwen is cherished and is already greatly missed by her husband of 22 years, Cornelius Bernard Howell; son, Harold J. Woody, II; daughter, DeMonica L. Woody; three grandbabies, Kylie Woody, Rylie Woody, and Quincy Fomby II; stepfather, Rev. Thomas A. Trammell; siblings, Nettie R. Burkes, Tarita S. Burkes, Jennell (Tony) Cole, Kerry J. Burkes, Kenny (Karen) Burkes, Brennetta Watkins, Lavon Horton, Jr., and Randy Horton; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Howell; sister-in-law Karen Howell; uncle and aunt, Jimmy (Laura) Horton, a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; special friends that were just like sisters, Pernicia Woody Douthard, Nerretta Hardy, Twylisha Sampson, Aquanetta Towers, Rhonda Turner, and Donna Ingram.
