It is with deep sympathy, that we announce the passing of Kevin "Popeye" Calloway of Gadsden, who transitioned from his earthly body on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at the age of 56. We ask that you keep his family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.
Kevin Derek "Popeye" was born on March 8, 1967, in Gadsden, Alabama, to the parents of Catherine Satomi and Mr. Dock Calloway.
Kevin was the second oldest of four children, Kim Satomi Calloway, Kevin Derek Calloway, Karen Marie Calloway, and Keith Dock Calloway.
He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the family church.
Kevin attended and completed school in the Gadsden City School System. He was a perceptive student who was eager to learn and always got along well with others. He enjoyed playing sports and was a team player on and off the field. Kevin never met a stranger, a behavior that was observed and learned from his unreserved parents. Through his friendly demeanor, he developed friendships that lasted until this day.
Kevin loved his family unconditionally, especially his boys and nieces. He also made time for his grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews. His great-nieces and nephews knew that Popeye always had something for them, whether it be candy, money, or some type of snack. He enjoyed cooking, watching football, and watching wrestling with Zion as well. He was a lover of Westerns and often watched them with his dad. Kevin continued watching Westerns after his dad’s passing and spending time with family and friends. He always tried to convince his family that he was “okay” and went to the doctor as he should, knowing that they adored him. He did not want anyone to worry. He knew that Devon and Ferlandous would get a call if he did not do what he was supposed to do. Kevin knew his family was concerned about his health and he always gave them an update on his health or any new medications he was on.
He was predeceased by his parents: Catherine Satomi and Mr. Dock Calloway of Gadsden, Alabama; sister, Kim Satomi Calloway; nephew, De’meriktiyel Calloway
Kevin leaves behind a legacy of altruism, kindheartedness, thoughtfulness, and a genuine memory of what it means to be caring and empathetic toward humankind. Kevin leaves a faultless heritage of love and commitment to family and friends. He always had time and was readily available to help others.
His memory will forever be treasured by his leaving three children, Devon Russell, Ferlandous Dobbins, and Mahai Creshun Erwin; four grandchildren, Jah’Leah Byers, Bryson Russell, Dre’Sean Russell, and Kaisydn Ford; nieces and nephews, Leah Harris, Zodia Calloway, Jodeci (Lucy) Vaughn, Alexis Calloway (D’Andre) Cotton; great-nieces and nephews, Jordan Middleton, Zion Vaughn, Desmond Peterson, Jr., Ava Dudley, Zoey Vaughn, Kim’Bella Peterson, and Calli Dudley; great-nephews, Aiden Cotton, Amir Cotton, and Adonis Cotton; great-great nephew, Zy’aire Middleton; aunts and uncles, Rev.
