It is with heartfelt sympathy that we announce the passing of Mother Martha Loretta Jemison Hicks of Gadsden, AL, who transitioned on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the age of 92.

Mother Martha Loretta Jemison Hicks was the fifteenth of sixteen children born to the union of the late Sam and Lottie Jemison, Sr. on September 23, 1929 in Etowah, County, Alabama.  She received her education from the Gadsden City School System- Carver Middle and Carver High School.  In 1952 she united in holy matrimony to Willie Lee Jackson. After his sudden passing, she united in marriage with Jerry Hicks until he was called to be with the Lord.

In 1966, Mother Martha united with Pure Holiness Church, where she worked faithfully under Bishop C. F. Fears.  In 1971 she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and worked faithfully in her Ministry of Love.  She later joined New Liberty Church under Pastor Melvin Crook, and continued to serve under the leadership of Pastor Willie J. Simmons. She worked close to her pastors in whatever capacity she was needed and became very polished in the Word of God. She was the President of the Senior Ministry for over 20 years and served as a faithfully member and missionary until her passing.

She was an accomplished songstress, gardener, cooking, baker and cake decorator. She enjoyed reading, shopping and going out. She was renowned for her International Grandma Teacakes and Cream Cheese  Pound Cake that she sent all over the world. She wore so many hats as a mother to many that yet she still had time to work at Baptist Memorial Hospital now Gadsden Regional Medical Center for 20 years as a counselor and hospitality member.  Her special interest was in the youth, spreading the good news of Jesus and winning many souls for the Lord.

Mother Martha lived an exemplary life that all who knew her could follow her footsteps.  To know her was to love her. She became Mother Martha to everyone who were graced by her presence.  We will miss her conversations, laughter, and words of consolation. Her favorite sayings will echo in our minds “Being saved is the good life!", and "How do you like being saved?” Her favorite scripture she adopted in 1972, Psalms 91, will forever be in our heart.
