Obituary

With heartfelt sympathy, we announce the earthly transition of Rickey Hughes of Gadsden, Turkeytown Community, who traded time for eternity on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the age of 68.

Mr. Rickey Hughes was born on August 12, 1954, to Betty Hughes and the late Frank Jelks in Gadsden (Turkeytown), AL.

Rickey joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Pastor Edward Pace.  He later joined and served at Macedonia Baptist Church and Galilee Baptist Church for several years before returning to his home church Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon until his passing.

Rickey attended Gaston High School and was a graduate of the class of 1973.  One of his greatest accomplishments was his athletic skills in baseball which awarded him the opportunity of being drafted right out of high school to play with the Montreal Expos Baseball Team.

Rickey married his high school sweetheart Karen Charlotte Diane Johnson and to that union, they had two children.

Rickey lived a full life where he enjoyed fishing, helping his friends and family work on home projects, spending time with his daughter and grandson, and attending church.  But his greatest joy was watching and attending sporting events played by his grandson.  Rickey was one of his biggest fans.

Rickey retired from Wabash Alloys in Steel, AL after many years of service.

Rickey traded earthly time for eternal rest on Friday, July 7, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rodrick Hughes; grandparents, Dennis and Alma Hughes; father, Frank Jelks; brothers, Benjamin Comer, and Gregory Jelks; and sister, Fonda Jelks.

He leaves to cherish precious memories his daughter, Rekita Chatrese Jackson; his grandson, Breylon Bernard Jackson both of Pinson, AL; a loving mother, Ms. Betty Jo Comer of River Rouge, MI; sisters, Sandra (Don) Moore and Rosetta (Lamere) Weathers; brothers, Darryl Hughes, Raynard (Dreama) Comer, Meldwayne (Venkita) Comer, Billy (Shannon) Comer, Anthony Comer, Tyron (Annette) Jelks, Vernon (Cescelie) Jelks, and Patrick (Beverly) Jelks; aunts, Mattie (Earl) Montgomery, Bobbie (Wayne) Landrom, and Annie Ruth Hughes; special cousin, Terra Guyton; lifelong friend, Charlotte Hughes; best friend, Jimmy Jacobs and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
