A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautuifully remembered.  Please join us in mouring the passing of Shirley Hawkins, of Gadsden, AL who traded time for eternity on Monday, January 20, 2025 at the age of 89.  Please keep her family, friends and church family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Shirley Lydell Hawkins, affectionately known by the community as “Mama Shirley,” was born on October 16, 1935, to the late Vernall and Jessie Vernon of Gadsden, Alabama. On January 20, 2025, Shirley peacefully transitioned to her eternal rest.

Shirley dedicated her life to Christ at an early age at Union Baptist Church, later becoming a devoted member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. Her unwavering faith and compassion for others were a testament to her deep relationship with God and her commitment to serving her community.
Shirley served as a secretary in the Gadsden City School System, contributing to numerous schools throughout the district. Her warm demeanor and dedication left a lasting impact on students, parents, and colleagues alike.

Shirley’s love for her family and friends was boundless. She cherished her grandchildren and shared special bonds with close friends Maxine, Mrs. Jan, Lana, Geraldine, and Dorosalind. She also shared a deep and enduring friendship with Mr. James Cannon of New Orleans.

Shirley’s final wish was to be at home, where she found comfort and peace. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vernall and Jessie Vernon; her sister Mary; her brothers Vernall, Jr. (“Bubba”) and James; her daughters Angela, Phyllis, and Valencia; her son Ivan; her granddaughter Kenya Swain and nephew Jason Vernon.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter, Christalyn Threatt of Gadsden, Alabama; her devoted son, Juan (Sandra) Hawkins of Austin, Texas; her sister-in-law, Marcia Vernon; her niece, Shawn Vernon of North Carolina; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
