Jessie, the daughter of the late Dave and Molly Price Wheeler, was born on July 14, 1925 in the community of Pricetown in Gaylesville, Alabama. 

Jessie confessed Christ at an early age joining Flint Hill Baptist Church in Pricetown.  Soon after she relocated, Jessie continued to worship with Cedar Grove Baptist Church. While at Cedar Grove, Jessie served her church family for over 55 years as Clerk Secretary; participating in the BTU Congress, Alabama Baptist Association & the Spring Creek District Association, just to name a few.

 Jessie graduated from Main High School in Rome, Georgia. She retired from the textile industry and began her full time career as a Servant of the Lord.  She volunteered passionately as a Pink Lady at the Cherokee County Hospital becoming the top seller for several years selling Love Lights-proceeds that went towards the hospital’s volunteer association. 

Jessie also found time to volunteer  with  American Red Cross, Cherokee County Nursing Home; influential member of the East Alabama Planning Committee, Cherokee County Lions Club, NAACP,  Alabama Democratic Committee, Order of Eastern Star, past Associate Patron and very instrumental in registering new voters.

Jessie lived a long prosperous life, full of love and compassion. She, along with her other close friends, always found time to fellowship with one another. Jessie went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 31, 2018…..the last of the “Golden Girls” is now home.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband Ross Clifton, Sr. two daughters, Jennie Ruth Smith,  Ella Faye Clifton Dupree; a son Roland Timothy Clifton; four sisters, Callie Granderson, Thelma Aker, Ruth Kindall, Ruth Applin; two brothers, Ernest Wheeler, Arthur Wheeler; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Jessie leaves to cherish her precious memories:  five sons, Ross (Fleta) Clifton, Jr. Cedar Bluff, AL, Oliver (Shirley-deceased) Clifton, Rome, GA, James (Jackie) Clifton, Cedar Bluff, AL, Charles (Helen) Clifton, Leesburg, AL, Walter (Juanita) Clifton, Las Vegas, NV;  five daughters, Loretta (Clifford Jr.) Higgins, Cedar Bluff, AL, Teresa Clifton, Rome, GA, Billie Jean (Jackie) Dupree, Leesburg, AL, Kimberly (Kenneth) Williams, Hampton, GA, Allyson Clifton, Stockbridge, GA; forty-seven grandchildren, one-hundred fifteen great grandchildren, forty-six great-great grandchildren, nineteen great-great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Annie Mae Mitchell and Mattie Mae Terhume both of Rome, GA; brother-in-law, Murvin Granderson, Sacramento, CA; chosen son, Lamar Aker, Oregon; special friends, Sue Young, Perry Stallings and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends too numerous to name.

I worked at Cherokee Medical Center with Ms. Jessie for many years. Loved hearing her talk about her family. It was always a pleasure to see the many hats she wore and would talk about them. She had a story to tell for each one of them. She was a wonderful lady.

At the end of each life is a legacy of love and memories. Hold tight to those memories…. Lean on each other for support. And look to God’s Word, the Bible, for comfort and strength. 1 Peter 5:7 encourages; “Throw all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.”
