A Life Well Lived.........Virginia Smith, 74, was received into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 10, 2019.   Virginia was born November 28, 1944, in Gadsden, Alabama and was the daughter of Johnny and Odell Smoot. She was a song writer and community activist in the early 60’s – participating in the March on Washington.  She accepted Christ and was baptized at a young age, participating in Sunday school, church choir and Baptist Training Union ministries at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church.  She graduated from Carver High School in Gadsden, Alabama, and relocated to New York City, New York where she was one of the first African Americans hired by the Bell System.  She returned to Gadsden in 1970 and most recently was affiliated with Greater Lula ACOP. 

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Lee Smith, Cleo Smith, Anne Smith Small, Clinton Smith and Bill Smith. She is survived by her children: Yolanda Smith of Gadsden, Anthony (Pamela) Smith of Gadsden, Brian (Eunice) Smith of (Las Vegas, Nevada), Kevin (Dana) Calhoun of Gadsden, Sharla (Derrick) Calhoun of Gadsden, and Crystal Calhoun of Birmingham, Alabama; brother, Myron (Tonya) Smoot of Mansfield, Texas; her sister-in-law Mary Smith of Atlanta, 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Survivors also include her aunt, Clemmie Jones of Lanett, Alabama and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Noon at Greater Lula ACOP, Gadsden, Alabama with the Bishop Thomas, presiding.  Interment will immediately follow at Lincoln Hill Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama.
